How to put a PDF on your Kindle Scribe

Send the PDF with Amazon's Send to Kindle, from the web page, the Kindle app or email. Kindle Scribe only lets you write directly on PDFs that arrive through Send to Kindle.

Which Kindle Scribes this works on

We make two Kindle Scribe sizes: one for the 10.2 inch Kindle Scribe (2024) and one for the 11 inch Kindle Scribe (2025) and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. Pick yours at checkout. The steps below are the same for all of them.

Download your PDF to a computer or phone first. Your download links are in your order email.

Use Send to Kindle, so you can write on it

Amazon only lets you write directly on PDF pages that arrive through Send to Kindle. That’s why every route below goes through it. PDFs that reached your library before November 11, 2022 can’t be written on either, so if you’re re-using an old copy, send it again.

Option 1: Send to Kindle on the web

  1. On your computer, go to amazon.com/sendtokindle and sign in with the Amazon account your Scribe uses.
  2. Drag the PDF onto the page, or browse for it. Files can be up to 200 MB, which covers all of our PDFs.
  3. Leave Add to your library turned on, and send.
  4. On your Scribe, connect to Wi-Fi. The PDF appears in your library.

Option 2: the Kindle app on your phone

Send to Kindle also works from the free Kindle app for iPhone and Android. Open the PDF on your phone, share it to the Kindle app and send it to your library.

Option 3: email

  1. Find your Send to Kindle email address on Amazon, under Manage Your Content and Devices, then Preferences, then Personal Document Settings.
  2. In the same place, make sure the email address you’ll send from is on your Approved Personal Document Email List. Amazon ignores email from anyone else.
  3. Email the PDF as an attachment to your Send to Kindle address. Keep the email under 50 MB.

Writing on the pages

Open the PDF from your library and write on the page with the Kindle Scribe pen. On the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft you can write in colour. If the pen won’t write on a page, the file most likely didn’t come in through Send to Kindle. Send it again using one of the options above. Amazon’s guide: File types that support notes.

About the links

Our PDFs have tap links between pages, such as index entries and breadcrumbs. Amazon’s help pages don’t describe how links inside a PDF behave on Kindle Scribe, so there’s no official guide we can point you to for them. Every page is numbered and in order, so you can always reach any page by turning pages.
